Powershare

Model 3 and Model Y can now power your house

Powershare Home Backup, previously Cybertruck-only, comes to Tesla's best-sellers. It needs a Powerwall 3 and a Wall Connector, works only in the US and Puerto Rico, and doesn't export to the grid.

The 10-second read

  • Vehicle-to-home backup now works on Model 3 and Model Y. It's guaranteed on cars ordered from Oct 1, 2026.
  • Requires Powerwall 3 (Powerwall 2/+ “coming soon”) and a Wall Connector.
  • US and Puerto Rico only; backup during outages, no grid export.
  • Tesla says a 90%-charged car covers 2+ days for a home using 30 kWh a day.

Until this week, using a Tesla as a home generator meant owning a Cybertruck. On October 6, Tesla enabled Powershare Home Backup on Model 3 and Model Y.

What you need

  • The car: support is guaranteed on Model 3/Y ordered on or after October 1, 2026. Some older cars have the necessary hardware, but Tesla isn't promising it.
  • A Powerwall 3. Support for Powerwall 2 and 2+ is "coming soon".
  • A Wall Connector.
  • Location: US and Puerto Rico only.

What it does, and doesn't

During an outage the car feeds the home through the Powerwall system. Tesla says a 90%-charged car can cover more than two days for a home using 30 kWh a day. It's backup only: no exporting to the grid and no earning from virtual power plants with the car's battery.

Why it matters

It ties the two halves of Tesla more closely together. The car makes the Powerwall more useful, and the Powerwall gives the car a new reason to exist. It also arrives as Tesla pushes home energy subscriptions, such as the $35/month Powerwall backup lease in Texas launched in August, and as the Tesla/Sunrun virtual power plant sent a record 580 MW to California's grid in September.
